We dug crates for this months List magazine…
On the eve of the leftfield house night’s fourth birthday, the residents pick some tunes for us:
Steven:
Nôze ‘Remember Love’ (My Best Friend) features one simple piano loop with two drunk Frenchmen reminiscing over what could have been in broken English with rolling choppy drums that will never get old. Franco-knees-up-party-starting house.
Pitch black drumless synths and morse code from the last days of pre-AIDS LA in 1980. The soundtrack to an off-Broadway play, Shawn-Daniel Foreman ‘Master Of The Universe’ (Ti Ohm) arrived at the same time everyone was wide-eyed dancing to disco.
We both claim Mike Dunn ‘Phreaky Mf’ (Robsoul Recordings). After hearing Phil Weeks play it and badgering him for the title the record eventually popped up almost a year later in Underground Solu’shn. Twelve warped minutes of Dunn covering Dynasty over a Loose Joints sample. Just have to mix out before it gets too wrong.
Stewart:
At one point I think we were a little unhealthily into Dubsided but Induceve ‘Why Burn’ (Dubsided) is one of the earlier ones that’s still in my bag. It’s got a sort of understated dubby sound that I don’t think I’ll ever tire of.
I love so much of Mathias Aguayo’s music but there’s something special about Mathias Aguayo ‘Minimal’ (Kompakt). The live feel it has sounds so effortless and the half English half Spanish vocals somehow sound totally natural. There’s also a cracking remix by the master DJ Koze on the B side.
There are a few Mr G tracks which make pretty regular appearances at Playdate but Mr G ‘U Askin’ (Rekids) probably tops the list. It’s mellow and harsh at the same time and definitely has the Mr G low end sound which he does so well.
